SheTracks, AAGYW Cameroon’s GPS-based safety and services mapping program, successfully completed its second phase in April 2024, with data now collected from 20 communities across the North West Region. The initiative trains young women to use mobile mapping tools to document safe spaces, healthcare facilities, schools, and barriers girls face in accessing them.
Data That Drives Change
Phase 2 produced Cameroon’s first community-generated dataset specifically centred on girls’ safety and access. The data reveals significant disparities: girls in rural communities travel an average of 4.2 km to the nearest health facility compared to 0.8 km for their urban counterparts. Only 34% of surveyed communities have a lit pathway to the nearest school.
The findings are now published on an open public dashboard, and three local councils have already cited the SheTracks data in budget allocation decisions for 2025.
Phase 3 Expansion Planned
Building on Phase 2’s success, AAGYW is planning a Phase 3 expansion to an additional 15 communities. Funding conversations with two international development partners are underway.
